My work on residential projects includes:
  • New Construction
  • Additions
  • Bath & Kitchen Remodels
  • Universal Design
  • Decks & Patios
  • Energy Analysis & Sustainable Design
  • 3-D Visualization & Computer Modeling
My design philosophy is grounded in creativity, functionality, sustainability, harmony with nature and value. I listen carefully to my clients to understand their goals, aspirations, and expectations. I then create a design that is on-budget and buildable. I am able to be flexible with my schedule so I meet with clients at their convenience.
I bring my expertise, rigor and best practices to all my projects both large and small. This has led to my history of rapid planning approval so my clients more quickly build and enjoy their new spaces.

"We would like to recommend Howard McNenny as an architect. He produces quality work at a reasonable price. Howard recently worked on our 2 story addition in Albany, adding about 900 square feet, as well as remodeling the rear of our house, including the kitchen. He is very knowledgeable, responsive to feedback, patient, timely, and pays attention to detail. Howard was very willing to work around our busy schedule and meet with us later in the evening, as well as on weekends."

Residential Addition, Albany, CA
A 450 s.f. two-story addition to provide a new family room on the ground floor, and master bedroom suite on the second floor. Economical design made maximum use of limited space while keeping to a tight overall budget.
Residential Remodel and Addition, Berkeley, CA
Phase I of this project involved the addition of a new vaulted ceiling bedroom and conversion of one bedroom to an adjoining master bath, a completely renovated kitchen, and re-design of circulation to provide direct access from living area to back yard via new deck on the side of the house. Phase II (not yet completed) will involve a new garage with patio above, and direct access from dining room via a pair of French doors.
Residential Addition, Richmond
This small one-story residence had been owned by me for a number of years, prior to my decision to re-develop the property in 2003. The 2-bedroom house was expanded in the rear by the addition of a new master bedroom wing, with adjacent private deck. Design and permitting were completed in a 3-month period, and construction was done in 4 months. Upon completion, the fully renovated house was immediately sold at a substantial premium to the asking price.
Kitchen Remodel, Berkeley, CA
The previous kitchen and adjoining laundry room dating from the 1920’s was completely gutted, and replaced with a new kitchen open to the dining room, and a view of the Bay beyond. The design features an island to effectively separate the work space from the circulation through the house, that previously passed through the work area of the kitchen.
Deck Addition, Albany, CA
A previously unused gravel roof over a garage was converted to a patio accessed directly from the dining room in this project in Albany. The new outdoor space is designed for year-round family use as well as for entertainment.
