I believe in design that is community sensitive, vibrant, pedestrian-friendly and supportive of the owner's needs. "Place-making" is a key component of my design philosophy. My focus is not only on individual buildings as architectural objects but as an experience for the people who come to a place, delight in the experience and as a result, return again and again.
Alameda Towne Centre, Alameda, CA
Renovation of the former South Shore Shopping Center into a pedestrian-friendly “life style” center. Completed while in previous employment at Field Paoli Architects.
City Place, Long Beach, CA
An 8 city-block redevelopment, opened October 2003. Features 439,000 s.f. of retail, 290 units of residential apartments and condominiums, as well as over 2500 spaces in 3 separate parking structures. The anchor tenant (Wal-Mart) is that chain’s first ever store with a corner entry, and adjacent parking structure. This project was completed under my direction while at KMD Architects in San Francisco. Client: Developers Diversified Reality Co.
Golden Gate Fields Master Plan
As part of the Albany Waterfront Coalition I led the design effort to propose an alternative plan for the under-utilized parking areas of the existing race track, and expansion of public recreational space.
Mixed Use Project, Albany, CA
Proposal for office/retail project at the foot of Solano Avenue. Parking is provided by a 4-level garage, proposed to be jointly financed with adjacent cinema. Courtyard entry provides much needed civic space for the community.
Sandcastle, Guam
This entertainment project on the island of Guam features a Las Vegas-style showroom and dinner theatre, with an adjacent disco. Completed under previous employment, the client has now asked for assistance in expanding the facility to include additional retail on the ground floor, and an owner’s residence on the top floor.
AMC Saratoga, San Jose, CA
A 14-screen cinema located in the El Paseo de Saratoga shopping center, completed in 1997. This cinema incorporates the latest in film presentation technology, and includes full stadium seating in all auditoriums. One of over a dozen cinemas designed and built under my direction while at KMD, including projects for Warner Bros. International Theaters, United Cinemas International, and AMC. Client: American Multi-Cinema Corp.
Warner Pavillion, Burbank, CA
A dual-purpose facility on the historic back lot of Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank CA, this is both a state of the art screening room for movie premiers and a working facility for editing and review of movies in production. The façade is designed as an extension of a turn of the century NewYork “brownstone” set on the studio lot.
Gallery Place, Washington, D.C.
This large mixed-use project, completed in previous employment, consisted of assistance in the development of themed retail storefronts for the ground floor retail.  A portion of the project fronted on the main street in the Chinatown district of DC, and was required by the local zoning authorities to appropriately reflect the thematic architecture of this district.
